Although Michigan has some great skiing and snowboarding,  it's mostly up in the northern parts. We did have hills with snow though. When the season began to change and frost was on the pumpkin the neighborhood kids began winterizing. Putting away the bicycle and skateboard(not to far, 2" of snow could be gone in an afternoon) and breaking out the sleds, skis, toboggans, etc. We lived next to 40 acres of woods connected to a giant gravel pit. Some of the houses backed up to it and it was the best sledding hill in the surrounding area. The sledding games we invented were attack the bomber. A toboggan full of kids would start at the top of the hill like an Olympic bobsled team. The kids lucky enough to have Snurfers would then attack them from all sides! They were the P-51s. Number of helmets: 0 Dangerous? Absolutely. Fun? Beyond comprehension. Another fun thing to do was to have Snurfer races. That was alright until we were good enough to make it to the road. When that happened all we needed was some dead sticks as slalom gates. As fun as Snurfing is the Super Racing Model with the metal fin was the one to have. The yellow "Snurfie"(Sherm Poppen's term) was good in fresh snow. Some good days we would get halves of inches. And loved every centimeter of it. After I got older, about 7 or 8, I was brought to Timber Ridge Ski Area in Gobals, Michigan. They didn't alow sleds or Snurfers but they did give you skis, boots and poles. Later I found that passes and rentals costs money. I made it to the top of the tow rope, A TOW ROPE! This was a rope that towed you to the top of the hill. Amazing, no more sweaty walks the the top. It took a couple of runs but soon I was headed to the bumps or "moguls" I would later find out. Then something catastrophic happened. I broke a ski in one of the bumps! Normally this meant going home and getting the third degree for being to rough on my toys or borrowing from one of your mates. Not at Timber Ridge Ski Area, they gave me another newer pair and said they were sorry. What a country! The next few years in school were pretty hard for me to focus. Snurfing and skiing in the winter, mini-biking  and skateboarding the rest of the time. And then in 1976 I went out west skiing and realized that my hill was kind of small and we NEVER got three feet of powder in a month, let alone in a night! When ski resorts allowed skiboarding I put away my skis and never looked back!
